Built from the ground up.
RML is a UK-based nationwide commercial roofing contractor, and a familyrun one. We would rather grow a project manager than advertise for one. So we bring people in at the start of their working life, pay for the qualification, give them the hours to do it properly — and then hand them real work while they learn.
Key Numbers
Guaranteed Accountability
An apprenticeship here isn’t work experience. It’s a job with a qualification attached.
Real Work Week One
Our apprentices log live jobs, chase certificates, quote work and sit in front of clients. Nobody spends a year shadowing. The work is the training.
Time to do it Properly
Study time is blocked out in the diary, in work hours. Coursework shouldn’t be something you cram in at 10pm after a full day on site.
Somewhere To Go Next
Every apprenticeship here has a next rung attached to it. People who started with us as apprentices are now running accounts and managing teams.

Grace is the newest face in the office — two weeks in, and already on the live stuff.
Her first week was planned out properly before she walked through the door: who she'd sit with, what she'd learn, and what she'd own by the end of it. That's deliberate. We learned the hard way that a good first week decides whether someone stays, so nobody starts here to be handed a login and left to it.
Over the next twelve months Grace will work across the admin side of a busy roofing contractor — job files, compliance paperwork, client correspondence — while working towards her Business Administration qualification. She joins a team where two of the people training her started exactly where she's standing.

Seven months in, and the change Ellie talks about first isn't a skill. It's confidence.
She joined us in February and is working through the written side of her apprenticeship — modules on logistics, legislation and mentoring, each one written up in full. Alongside that she's part of the office team every day, which is where the theory stops being theory.
What she says about support matters to us. An apprentice who feels daft asking a question learns nothing, so we'd rather be asked ten times than have someone guess once.
“I've learnt a lot already and I'm getting more confident with the different tasks I'm doing. The business as well as my tutor have been really supportive, and I feel like I can always ask questions if I'm unsure about something.”

Brodie built the compliance tracker the business now runs on. He's 19 and it's his coursework.
The problem was ordinary and annoying: operative certificates, permits and expiry dates scattered across folders and inboxes, with no single place to see what was about to lapse. Rather than write about a problem for his apprenticeship project, Brodie built the fix — an app that tracks every certificate and permit and flags them before they expire. The team uses it. Daily.
He's currently sitting at 74% progress against a 62% target and preparing to present the project to City & Guilds. He's also a qualified Mental Health First Aider, which he did on top of everything else.
“It's the first time I've built something from scratch that the team actually uses, so that's been class to see come together. RML's been really good giving me the time to actually crack on with it.”

Blocked out in the diary. Not a favour — policy.
Rohan is learning management theory in a classroom and testing it on live sites the same week.
His latest assignment — a 4,500-word report on managing quality and continuous improvement — used a change he'd actually helped land: moving daily site progress out of unsorted WhatsApp threads and into Connecteam, so the whole team can see where every job stands in one place. That's the point of doing this qualification inside a working business rather than alongside one.
His Thursday mornings after college are blocked out in the diary for coursework. Not a favour — policy. We asked people to do a qualification, so we give them the hours to do it well.
“I'm seeing similarities and opportunities to apply new knowledge to my own work — rather than cramming it around my personal life outside of work.”

Grace joined RML as an apprentice. She now handles national clients on her own name.
On any given week she's picking up website enquiries within the hour, going out to site, pricing the work and holding the client relationship afterwards — from single-building gutter reline jobs to multi-site schedules for national brands. She's on a sales apprenticeship on top of that, so the qualification and the account list are growing together.
Grace is the clearest answer we have to “where does an apprenticeship here actually go?” — which is why she's the one prospective apprentices should talk to.
Nobody here is hired to stay where they started.
The apprenticeship is the first rung, not the whole ladder. Our helpdesk manager came in as an admin. Our business development lead came in as an apprentice. The route is real, and it’s the same one every current apprentice is on.
