Rooflight Replacements
Virgin Active
Northampton
Introduction
Four night shifts. Zero lost trading.
The Marvault rooflights over the pool hall at Virgin Active Riverside Park had reached the end of their serviceable life. RML surveyed the roof by drone, then replaced every unit on night shifts — starting after the pool closed at 10pm and working through, four nights running. The club opened as normal every morning. Not a single session lost.
The Challenge
The rooflights sit directly above a swimming pool in a club that trades all day. A conventional programme would have meant closing the pool hall — lost sessions, unhappy members, and a birdcage scaffold standing in the water. The roof itself is a wide sheeted plane with no permanent edge protection at the rooflight bank, so the access question was every bit as difficult as the roofing one.
The Solution
RML worked nights. Once the pool closed at 10pm the team moved in, laid full protective sheeting across the water below the work zone, and worked from a roof-level scaffold with mansafe guarding for edge protection — no birdcage, no plant in the pool hall, no interference with the club’s trading day. Existing Marvault units and fixings were stripped out, kerbs made good, and new single skin Marvault rooflights installed like-for-like, with all perimeter seals, laps and fixings formed to manufacturer guidance. Four night shifts, start to finish.
