Refurbishment and thermal upgrade of the flat roof at the B&M Stonedale retail store.
Full Thermal Roof Upgrade
B&M Stonedale
Project Overview
This project involved the refurbishment and thermal upgrade of the flat roof at the B&M Stonedale retail store located on the outskirts of Liverpool. The roof area exceeded 1,000 square metres and required the installation of a new high-performance roofing system to improve insulation, durability, and long-term performance.
A key challenge of the project was that the store remained fully operational throughout the duration of the works, requiring careful coordination and planning to ensure minimal disruption to daily store activities.
Key Challenges
Working on a live retail environment presented several logistical and safety considerations. It was essential to maintain safe access for roofing teams while ensuring customers and staff could continue to use the store without disruption. Deliveries and material handling also needed to be carefully coordinated around the store’s day-to-day operations. At the same time, the project had to be carried out without affecting trading hours or restricting customer access. Completing the work efficiently despite these operational constraints required careful management throughout the project.
To address these challenges, detailed planning was undertaken before work began. This included coordinating delivery schedules and establishing clearly defined safe working zones to ensure the project could proceed smoothly while the store remained fully operational.
Access & Safety
To facilitate safe access to the roof area, a purpose-designed perimeter scaffold system was installed around the building. The scaffold incorporated a dedicated access tower, enabling roofing operatives to reach the work area safely and efficiently. Its design ensured secure working conditions at height while also maintaining clear separation between the construction activity and the public areas of the site. This setup allowed the works to proceed smoothly while providing a safe environment for both the workforce and members of the public.
Installation
The project involved a complete thermal upgrade of the existing flat roof using a Langley Roofing Systems manufacturer-approved solution. All works were carried out by experienced operatives in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation guidelines, ensuring the roof system achieved optimal performance, durability, and long-term reliability.
Results
Despite the challenges of working on a fully operational retail site, the project was successfully completed within a three-week programme. In total, more than 1,000 m² of roofing was upgraded, significantly improving the building’s thermal efficiency while maintaining a high standard of workmanship throughout. The installation was carried out in line with manufacturer requirements and delivered a high-quality finish within the agreed schedule. Importantly, all works were completed without any disruption to store operations or customer access.
Following completion, the roofing system was fully inspected and signed off by the manufacturer, confirming that the installation met all required standards and specifications.
